Russia and Japan are going to develop a programme of cooperation in environmental safety in the two country’s adjacent areas ahead of the G8 summit on Hokkaido due in July.
The leader of the Russian delegation Nail Latyupov, who is the chief of the Russian Foreign Ministry’s department on countries of the Asia Pacific region, said that cooperation would involve areas of Kamchatka, Sakhalin, the Primorye Territory, Kuriles and the north of Hokkaido.
The diplomat said the “sides have no differences on principal questions; main work is concentrating now on agreeing on formal details”.
“Russia’s stance consists in maximally reducing damage to biological resources in its areas. The factors of risk are frequent oil spills, bird flu spread by migration birds and the poaching activity,” Latypov said.
“A draft bilateral agreement is to become a preliminary result of our work,” he said.
